Be Kinder and Humbler
I carefully watch actions around the world. In the U.S., I watch what is happening in greater America, the state where I live, and my community. My analysis is we need to change behavior. My goal for 2020-2030 is to “Strive to be kinder, and more humble. It is consistent with the UNDP Sustainable Development to pick just a few obtainable goals on the list and promote them in my community. Can we all strive to be a kinder and more humble community?
Why should we be kinder and more humble
Being kinder and more humble starts at home, then it extends to the community. Many community members throughout America have a sense of entitlement. Including, entitlement to land. The very land which belonged to Native Americans first.
Some Americans feel entitled because they are of direct white European decent. This dangerous attitude has caused a dangerous upturn in Nationalism or White Supremacy, plus a terrible resurgence of racism in the U.S. It showed up most recently at Bernie Sander’s most recent in Arizona. How did we get here?
What is Nationalism
People talk about Nationalism as if it is politics, but it is not. It is an ideology. According to Merriam-Webster, Nationalism means exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups Intense nationalism was one of the causes of the war. That sounds scary to me. How do people in the United States get radicalized?
What can we do to begin change?
Change begins with family. Having meals together and telling each other about your day. In our efforts to reach for the bigger house in the better subdivision, parents must work more in the city or suburbia. Grandparents are more likely to live in a more rural area. Children and grandchildren do not hear as many stories passed from generations past.
A tight knit community gathers
UN Declaration of Human Rights
One of the forward ward thinking places to look for ideas is to look backwards. Start with the “Universal Declaration of of Human Rights” which President Franklin Roosevelt fostered. Commission, Eleanor Roosevelt was the driving force in creating the 1948 charter of liberties which will always be her legacy: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
